We recently came across a great tool we’d like to share. It’s called Mobile Planet and it provides statistics on Smartphone usage and mobile attitudes. The data is from a global survey that was conducted earlier this year, but what’s really great is the simple interface that allows a users to slice and dice the data to create your own charts.
Using the tool, we pulled a couple of charts that we thought were interesting. Specifically, we looked at Smartphone penetration, number of people who have make a purchase with their Smartphone, and barriers to making a purchase on a Smartphone.
A little bit more about the study –
“The study is a global effort conducted in partnership by Google, Ipsos and the MMA (Mobile Marketing Association) to get insights about the mobile user and its mobile usage. To better understand the mobile usage, the OurMobilePlanet site provides deep dives into the search, video, social and email behaviour, as well as mobile research and purchase intentions. Most of the data is set into context to the classical desktop internet to evaluate difference and similarities between these channels.”

Very interesting tool. It’s great to see a large data set like this visualised in an easy to understand way – perfect for project insight.
Also, I had no idea that smartphone penetration was higher in Australia than in both the UK and US!
Thanks for posting.
