HTML5: Explanation and Relevance

HTML 5 has turned into a buzz word. Twitter, Facebook, blogs and news articles have been trending HTML5 over the last few months. So what exactly is HTML5 and how is relevant to you? HTML5 is the updated version of the HyperText Markup Language standard, which incorporates new elements and attributes useful for users and developers alike.

Major changes include
(1) the canvas element, which allows you to render graphics without plug-ins
(2) the video element, which allows you to embed videos without plug-ins
(3) geolocation, which pinpoints exact location based on towers and GPS
(4) offline web applications, which gives you instant access to applications like mail and documents.

If you’ve seen Arcade Fire’s new music video, then you have already experienced the wonders of HTML5. The site asks users for their address, and then builds the video up along to their new song The Wilderness Downtown. We made a video using our UK office address, check it out! This site highlights HTML5 possibilities, such as custom size video clips, canvas 3D engine rendering based on music and mouse, embedded music, choreographed windows, procedural drawing tool, and custom rendered Google maps API integration.

HTML5 is revolutionizing mobile advertising. The open system will save development time, accurately track impressions and clicks, take less time to load on devices, offer flexible design capabilities, and most importantly will be supported across all smart phone platforms, meaning no customization for each.

Last week W3C announced that it is happy for the excitement and support around HTML5, but it doesn’t believe HTML5 sites are ready for production yet. This concern comes as a result of issues with video content across browsers and devices. The W3C believes HTML5 will be fully approved in 2 or 3 years. Developers aren’t going to stop or not use HTML5 for the next couple of years because of this announcement, but instead build content that highlights the amazing capabilities of HTML5.
