Our Biggest Audience Yet, The Global Funds Born HIV Free Campaign

The Global Fund Channel

Yesterday wrapped up the Born HIV Free campaign: the most visited YouTube channel Beyond has ever built.

Earlier this year Beyond began working with The Global Fund and YouTube to create a channel that asked visitors to sign up to the petition wall and increase awareness of the Born HIV Free campaign to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. With the support of figures such as the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni and Kofi Annan the campaign promised to be very high profile.

In the first month alone, the channel received 5.5 million views and has since accumulated an astounding 17.5 million helping The Global Fund to raise an incredible 11 billion dollars!

A couple of months after launch the channel was re-skinned in preparation for the live streaming of Paul McCartney’s performance at The Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park, London on June 27th. The live streaming attracted 1.5 million unique visitors to the channel on the day of the concert. In addition to viewing this exclusive live footage viewers were able to chat to each other during the live event through a custom built twitter gadget by simply logging in with their twitter id.

The channel had built in geo-detection and was available in five languages. It included a dynamic name wall gadget where users could add their name to the list, and watch as it appeared on the Flash wall behind the signature form. A moderation system ensured no offensive names were published and to keep track of the thousands of names that were being added. Other features included a custom player, video carousel gadget and Facebook like functionality.

The channel utilised the latest technologies and was hosted on the cloud to ensure it could handle the volume of traffic it received every day. A video management system was set up, ingeniously using data from Google docs, allowing the administrator to add YouTube video ID’s, manage the order of the videos and load them in to the carousel dynamically, seamlessly and efficiently without the need for any technical skills.
